Using Data and Technology to Rethink Retail

About

The brick-and-mortar retail landscape is rapidly evolving. Shopping centres no longer compete only with other physical shopping environments; they now compete for people’s time. Remaining relevant in a market of e-commerce and digitization requires a shift in thinking – one that embraces disruption and innovation. Technology will continue to evolve the retail landscape; retailers and landlords who work alongside these advances and continue to curate unique retail destinations will gain un-tapped opportunities in customer engagement and loyalty. With more than 18 million annual visitors, thousands of parking spaces and more than 250 shops and services spread across the equivalent of more than 30 football fields, Yorkdale is an operational marvel.

I’ve never done a hackathon before. Can I still participate?

Yes! Hackathons are a great opportunity to have fun, network and apply your skills in a new way.

Do I need to be a developer to participate?

No! This hackathon will focus on business cases not functioning applications - no developer experience required.

What’s up with team participation?

We believe in the power of collaboration and have found that the best solutions are often created by teams of 2-6 participants.

What if I don’t have a team?

Don’t worry - we’ll help you find teammates once you register. The Hackworks platform is built specifically to identify teams that are looking for additional members and to connect participants with specific skillsets.

Will food be provided?

Yes. All meals plus lots of snacks and drinks will be provided throughout the weekend. Let us know if you have any dietary restrictions when you register.

Do I need to be at the venue for the entire hackathon?

You are encouraged to work on site as much as possible, but are welcome to come and go as you please.

What do I need to bring?

Bring any devices and chargers that you’ll need to build your solution and presentation with. We’ll provide wifi, electrical connection, food, drinks, and lots of comfy workspace throughout the weekend.

Who owns the IP of the solutions?

You will be required to submit your presentation in order to be considered for final judging and prizes but all IP belongs to participants, even after you submit.

What are the prizes?

Judges will determine the 3 top teams. Prizes for top teams are: $10,000 for the first place team, $3,000 for the second place team and $2,000 for the third place team. All participants will also receive swag.
